Moving Tips
Tip#1
When screening moving companies, make sure your movers send you a written estimate with either a binding (fixed) price or non-binding (hourly) rate. Remembering to maintain expectations for the moving company allows for a clear direction when it comes to budgeting, but it also ensures that the hired service is held accountable.
Tip#2
If packing yourself, start by emptying out one room at a time and sorting everything into four piles: keep, donate, trash, or store. Label each box with the room it belongs in and use different colors for each category of item (kitchen supplies in blue boxes, bedroom items in green boxes, etc.). This will help you envision the unpacking process.
Tip#3
Pack heavier items on the bottom and lighter items on top. This will help keep your boxes from becoming too heavy, and also makes it easier to stack them in the moving truck.
Tip#4
When packing fragile items, use plenty of bubble wrap and newspaper. If you’re packing dishes or glasses, pack them in individual cardboard boxes and fill any empty spaces.
Tip#5
To save money on packing materials, visit your local grocery store and ask them to set aside their empty cardboard boxes. You can also use old newspapers, magazines, or any other soft materials you have lying around the house (clothes, towels). Just make sure not to pack anything that could be damaged by becoming wet or dirty.
Tip#6
It’s best to have a moving truck that is larger than you think you will need, just in case of any unforeseen circumstances (such as needing more space for the last-minute items). If possible, get an estimate from at least three different companies before making your final decision on which one to use. This way there won’t be any surprises when it comes time to pay them their price quote.
