We’ve recently covered that many people are leaving the city of Austin who have moved here from places like California and New York. The team at Sarver Movers doesn’t want it to sound all gloom and doom though, there are still plenty more reasons to move here than there are to move away.
So, we thought it’d be nice to write a blog post about some of the 5 most popular things to do in the city of Austin! This is a city that has so much to offer and depending on what life is looking like for you, it may just be the right move for you.
We’re more than just local movers in Austin, we’re a moving company that shows up to your home as strangers and leaves as friends. As friends, we’d like to suggest 5 fun things to do in Austin as well as the surrounding area.
We love to meet our customers at these moves and get to know them better as we help them get through these transitional times in their life. That’s what a good moving company in Austin should do, they should make sure that people are taken care of and can rely on them to help them move their life forward.
Moving can be stressful and you should want the moving company in Austin that you hire to be the type that relieves that stress, not adds to it. That’s what our team of professionals wants to do!
1. Music Festivals in Austin
If you’ve followed along with our posts, you may be aware that we help provide moving labor for events in Austin like music festivals and music related events such as South By Southwest. You should also know that the city of Austin is the “Music Capital of the World”, so naturally we are obligated to mention that live music is one of the main attractions this fair city has to offer.
Austin has a rich history related to music and live performances. From the German beer garden days of early Austin to Snoop Dogg performing live on 6th street, SXSW is the premier music festival in town that has seen it all.

2. Take an Aquatic Tour of Lady Bird Lake With Austin Duck Adventures
If you’re looking to take a tour of Austin and see some of the sites, you should head over to Austin Duck Adventures . This amphibious tour of the city is something that we at Sarver Movers feel is a must whenever visiting beautiful Austin, TX.
You’ll not only get to see and learn about the capital of Texas, the Governor’s Mansion and of course, Lake Austin. On their website, they boast an unsinkable, US Coast Guard inspected vehicle that can travel both on land and water.
Tours run 7 days a week from 11am to 4pm depending on weather conditions as well as other factors such as holidays and seasonal conditions. This classic Austin tour is typically going to run you anywhere from $30 to $40 per person and is well worth the money.
3. Watch the World Famous Congress Bridge Bats
There is a bridge that connects South Austin to downtown, this is the famous Congress Avenue bridge. There are some 1.5 million bats that live under this bridge and fly out from under the bridge every night from mid-March to November around 8pm to go on the hunt for mosquitos.
These little rodents with wings help us to rid the city of those pesky parasites every night consuming millions of mosquitos every single time they go out to hunt. The Mexican free-tail bat can be seen departing from the bridge around 30 to 60 minutes before sunset and will return before sunrise so they can rest up for the next day.
This activity is completely free and attracts people from all over the world, all you have to do is show up to the bridge at Congress, there is only one, and stand there until they take flight.
It’s quite the spectacle and you will definitely know when it happens as millions of bats are hard to miss. Looking for a more extreme bat watching experience, you can pay anywhere from $10 to $15 to hop on a bat boat watching tour. This will allow you to get an even better, up close and personal, view of these bats taking off. All in all, it’s a spectacle that you don’t want to miss!
4. Go Camping at a Texas State Park or Check Out Zilker Park in Austin
Are you looking to relax a little and get in touch with nature? Find a park to pitch a tent at using the Texas Parks and Wildlife website. This website has a map with all 88 of the state parks pinned to it, these parks usually require a reservation in order to go camping.
Some of the more popular ones around Austin include Inks Lake State Park, Longhorn Cavern State Park and Enchanted Rock State Park. Those are 3 of the most popular state parks in the Hill Country area and are some of the best places to camp out in all of Texas!
Bring a high quality tent with a rain fly, gather firewood or purchase some at the park, a first aid kit, sleeping bag and pad, plenty of clothes, your toiletry kit and all of the necessary camping gear you’ll need. Find a good online camping checklist that includes these things and many more, the last thing you’ll want to do is be out in the woods and not have enough water or some other basic essential!
Once you’ve got everything loaded up in your car, you’ll know that you’re completely prepared to make the most of your peaceful weekend away from electronics and the hustle and bustle of the city.
Maybe you don’t want to get your hands dirty and you’d like to just take your dog out for a walk at a local park. Check out Zilker Park near downtown Austin for a relaxing evening dog walk or to just make some new friends there. There’s always people juggling, playing soccer and playing random games at Zilker. Don’t be shy, Austin is a super friendly city and there is always someone out there that would like to make new friends as well.
Not feeling social? You could grab a book, bring a blanket and get some food for a picnic! Regardless of what you decide to do, if you go and check out Zilker park, you will not regret it!
5. Get Rowdy On 6th Street For a Fun fFilled Weekend
Don’t be fooled by the title, you can go to 6th street every single night of the week, it’s just a little more fun on the weekends! 6th street has long been known for its active music scene and wild bar patrons that party a little hard starting around noon and until the bars close at 2am.
Austin has plenty of craft breweries and distilleries to check out and is actually in the top ten cities for alcohol consumption per capita in America. There are plenty of bars to go to on 6th street like the famous Blind Pig Pub, but if that part of downtown is a little too grimy for you, head over to East 6th.
Head east of I-35 on 6th street and see what used to be a lesser known part of town, but is now a more popular scene for music lovers to see some upcoming local artists debut their new material at the Volstead Lounge. If live music isn’t what you’re after and you’ve got some money to spend, head down to the high class rainey street and grab a drink at the Container Bar.
This bar is made completely out of old shipping containers that have been renovated into a classy space where folks can enjoy craft beers and well mixed cocktails.
